Frequently Asked Questions
+ How is Theory of Racelessness different from most anti-racism agencies, coaches, or practices?
We are inspired by bell hooks’ book All About Love: New Visions (2018). In the book, hooks, a renowned scholar, defines “love” as a verb, not a noun, and says that more of us would create and be met with unification, compassion, and care if we worked from a place of love, an action, not a romantic feeling. Similarly, Martin Luther King, Jr., James Baldwin, Toni Morrision, and Malcolm X (toward the end of his life), and countless more historical figures centered the idea, indeed, the action of love. Traditional approaches from within anti-racist discourse disrupt the possibility of love for people perceived and labeled to be both inside or outside of particular categories. Ironically, most participants are well-intentioned, but the commonly accepted practices crumble under scrutiny, if criticism and questioning were encouraged or, indeed, allowed. We center love in all aspects of our approach. More than that and of equal importance, Dr. Sheena Mason’s unique expertise provides a bridge between corporate America, nonprofits, activism, advocacy, human resources, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and academia. She knows both “theory” and practice and is highly skilled at combining the two.
+ Who do we help?
We work primarily with corporations and institutions. Our focus is aimed at lessening institutionalized racism, which explains, in part, our work with corporations and institutions. However, we have services geared toward a more general public: “Free Your Mind with Dr. Sheena Mason,” a podcast, publications (articles and a forthcoming book), and speaking events and conferences.
+ How do you define race, racism, and anti-racism?
Excellent question. Please go to our “Podcast” tab to learn more about how Dr. Sheena Mason defines these terms. These podcasts will be live in July 2021.
